In Person Google I/O 2019
I started my career as an Android Developer at Mumbai based tech startup in Jan 2012. Ever since then I have never missed watching Google I/O Keynote on the live stream. This year, I got a sponsored ticket for Google I/O from Servify to attend it in person. Believe me, it was a mesmerizing experience.
A day before the event I went to do my check-in. I collected my badge and some swag from Google.
On day 1, my excitement was beyond words. Shoreline Amphitheatre, full of Android/Google Devs across so many countries. It was the first Google I/O for many of us.
Before beginning the Keynote, Google was projecting funny/cool developer tweets which most of us can relate.
In Keynote pre-show, DJ Nao Tokai showcased a live example of AI learning the beats, predicting the relevant songs, and mixing. Basically, automating DJs’ job with AI. This was very cool to start a conference with a showcase of the power of AI.
The stage was set for Google Keynote. It was then followed by a Developer Keynote.
I will summarise my experience with the following key points
- Google Keynote
- Developer Keynote
- Sessions
- Sandboxes
- Interacting with Google Developers
Google Keynote
I was overwhelmed to see Google CEO, Mr. Sundar Pichai on stage. He began the Keynote with Google’s goal.
Google’s mission is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
Google is moving from company to find answers to the company that helps you things done.
Google I/O App has AR to navigate to different venues and some easter eggs.
Aparna Chennapragada, shown a live demo of Camera and AR, was pretty amazing to see what AR can do. Capabilities of Google Lens and Android Go are already impacting the lives of millions around the world.
Google Duplex, doing restaurant reservations was launched last year. Now, it’s available on the web (Duplex on the Web). Rental car booking and movie ticketing are new use cases covered. It’s great how it simplifies the workflow and makes such tasks easier.
Next-generation Google Assistant is just a 0.5GB on-device model, makes it lightning-fast by reducing network latency. This is one of the biggest announcement of Google I/O. Opening Apps, searching information, booking ride, turning flash on or taking selfie by just back to back commands.
